Splenic Abscess: Etiology, clinical spectrum and Therapy

Journal Title: IOSR Journal of Pharmacy (IOSRPHR) - Year 2015, Vol 5, Issue 1

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Spleen abscess is a rare entity, only 600 cases reported in the literature, it has a high mortality in immunocompromised patients, and delay in diagnosis and treatment. Splenic abscess is more common in patients with endocarditis, immunocompromised and in patients with immunodeficiency virus infection. Common pathogens isolated include streptococcus spp, staphylococcusspp, mycobacteria, fungi, parasites, andBurk holder iapseudomalleiisolates in melioidosis endemic regions. Computed tomography and ultrasonography guided percutaneous aspiration in common in recent years. Medical treatment alone is insufficient. Splenectomy is considered to be a gold standard for splenic abscesses; different approaches based on abscess characteristics have shown success. KEYWORDS: Splenicabscess, percutaneousdrainage, splenectomy, and therapy
