ASSESSING THE EFFICIENCY OF PROTECTED AREAS

Abstract

While in the past different principles used to guide some protection actions, often containing subjective considerations concerning the importance and state-of-the-art of one or another of these areas, at present sustainable protection measures imply the conservation of floristic and faunistic elements belonging to a wide diversity of natural habitats found over large areas. An important aspect is to appraise the optimal size of a protected territory. The findings have revealed that in eight parks and nature reserves of Romania, survinal areas aresuitable for the seven mammalian species discussed in the paper. However, the average-sized protected areas for these species is still far from ideal, which means that, before opening a reserve, it is necessary to know exactly what species are to be protected and estimate the size of the protected areas in terms of the ecology and ethology of these species in order to secure their reproduction.
