Abstract

It is known, out of the three Romanian provinces, Moldova was the most receptive to the French culture. Here, the contacts with the movement of European ideas were more powerful. The struggle for national affirmation increased the political consciousness of Moldovian society and the participation in the political life. It also developed the taste for reading, and mentality began to transform: were requested and then translated works with socio-political ideas, universal history, geography, technical achievements, or moralizing philosophical literature. The oldest copies of works translated from French into Romanian, which are kept in our library, dating from the late eighteenth century. They are translations from Voltaire, Marmontel, Ambrosius Marlianus, Francesco Loredano, Fénélon, Johan Thuresson Oxenstiern, Gabriel Pérau, Alain Réné Lesage, André Guillaume Constant d' Orville. The printed book (to 1800 inclusive) comes from the known printing workshops in Paris, London, Geneva, Regensburg, Basel and Berlin. The oldest specimen, Le tableau de L'Europe, is printed in Paris in 1651. For those interested, we made a list of these books, by category of owners.
