Determination of Psychiatric Disorders Among Outpatients Who Admitted to Internal Medicine Clinic in a University Hospital

Abstract

 Objective: Chronic diseases and psychiatric disorders are common health problems. Association of these two chronic processes is an important issue that should be considered in view of general practice. Despite prevalence of psychiatric disorders, they usually unrecognized and the symptoms and complaints of chronic disorders can be masked in these patients. Method: In this study for the purpose of evaluating the cases with hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic renal failure with hemodialysis treatment, diabetes mellitus and cancer and profiling the psychiatric disorders and evaluating psychiatric disorders in view of PRIME MD scale applied to randomly selected 424 persons. Results: Psychiatric disorders found to be more common in women with chronic diseases. According to PRIME MD results, of the 424 persons who have physical disease 175 (%41.3) was diagnosed with a PRIME MD diagnose. In ki square test, a significant association was found between chronic diseases and emotional disorder, alcohol abuse and somatization disorder diagnoses. Conclusion: Psychiatric examinations should also be done in cases with chronic diseases when their physical examination was performed.
