Effect of temperature and pH on the growth and sporulation of Fusarium moniliforme: Causing bakanae disease of rice
Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2015, Vol 11, Issue 3
Abstract
Bakanae disease of rice caused by Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon is one of the major rice disease in many rice growing countries including Bangladesh. Under favourable disease development conditions it causes substantial yield losses. The experiment was conducted in Plant Pathology Laboratory of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) to know the effect of temperature and pH on growth and sporulation of F. moniliforme. In this study six (5, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35oC) levels of temperature and seven (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10) levels of pH were tested against three period (3, 6 and 9 days) of measurement. Mycelial culture of the fungus grown at 25oC produced the highest colony diameter at all the period of measurement and was significantly higher than the other levels of temperature. However, the culture of F.moniliforme at 30oC consistently produced the highest number of spores after nine days of incubation. F. moniliforme grew well in all range of pH tested. The widest colony diameter and maximum sporulation was observed at pH6 after 9 days of incubation. Number of spore production sharply decreased after pH8 and lowest spore/ ml was recorded at pH10.
