Influence of water soluble phenolics of Vicia sativa L. on germination and seedling growth of pulse crops

Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2014, Vol 8, Issue 3

Abstract

An experiment was carried out to assess the allelopathic effect of water extract of V. sativa. on germination and seedling growth of mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) and mashbean (Vigna mungo L.) at various concentrations viz. 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4% in Laboratory, Department of Agronomy, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, during 2013. The results revealed that all the germination and seedling growth attributes of both crops were significantly inhibited by the influence of water extract at various concentrations as compared to control. Lowest germination percentage, germination index, root and shoot length, seedling dry weight and seedling vigour index of both crops was observed by the effect of water extract of V. sativa at 4% concentration, whose effect was similar with water extract at 3% concentration. The HPLC analysis of water extract showed the presence of Ferulic acid, 4-Hydroxy-3-Methoxybenzoic acid and p-Coumaric acid. The study shows that the inhibition of germination and seedling growth of mungbean and mashbean occurred due to the presence of phenolics in the water extract of V. sativa and therefore, this weed should not be allowed to establish in the field to avoid its deleting effects.
