Investigation into the Medicinal Values of Cola Species-Cola Nitida and Cola Acuminata
Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2015, Vol 10, Issue 1
Abstract
The seeds of cola nut (Cola nitida and Cola acuminata) were screened for antimicrobial activity against some gram-positive bacteria; Staphylococcus aurues, Streptococcus faecalis and some gram-negative bacteria; Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli (most of which are enteric organisms). The active components of the two varieties of cola nuts were extracted using distilled water. Sterile filter paper discs of 6.2mm in diameter were used in evaluating the activity of the seed extracts of cola nuts against viable and pure cultures of the test organisms. The results showed that extracts of the two varieties exhibited antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi at the concentration of 10mg/ml and 10mg/ml whereas others were resistant. Thus, septic lesions due to Staphylococcus aureus may be treated with cola nut extracts or paste and maybe, just maybe, typhoid fever attack may be low in people that consume cola nuts.
