Significance of Mast Cell Density and Distribution in Various HistopathologicalLesions of Leprosy

Abstract
Background: Leprosy also known as Hansen’s disease(HD), is a chronic infection caused by the Mycobacteriumleprae. Mast cells in leprosy have been investigatedin the recent past and are being examinedas a basis for future studies. Materials and Methods:119 leprosy cases and 14 control biopsies stained withtoluidine blue were assessed for density and distributionof mast cells. 38 cases had undergone treatment.Results: Significantly higher mast cell count was obtainedin the skin lesions of borderline lepromatous leprosy.On comparison with controls lower counts wereobserved in polar tuberculoid and indeterminate leprosywhereas higher values were observed in all othergroups. The mast cell count in leprosy is probably determinedby the pattern of cytokines released by the Tlymphocytes. Mast cell density assessed after treatmentwas reduced in borderline tuberculoid and borderlinelepromatous cases however in indeterminategroup, the counts were increased. Conclusion: Thedistribution of mast cells in leprosy is a variable featureand there is no constant site or predilection for a particulartype of leprosy.
