The language of chancellery documents during Matei Basarab’s rule (1632-1654)

Abstract

The main activity of Walachia’s Chancellery was the issuance of official acts according to the decisions made by the ruler (Rom. „domn”, Lat. „dominus”) and the country’s council. In the beginning, although people of this country spoke Romanian, these documents were written mostly in the Slavonic language. During Matei Basarab’s rule, we can easily observe how Romanian language takes precedence over the Slavonic one in more official chancellery documents than before. We have tried to analyze this transition given the historical context, and wanted to observe if there was a specific type of beneficiary that was still receiving documents in Slavonic language or if there were certain chancellery scribes used especially due to their knowledge in this regard.
