To Compare the Effect of Pre and Post Weight Bearing Anxiety, Depression inConventional and Modular Prosthesis on Unilateral Transtibial Amputees
Journal Title: Journal of Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences University - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
Aims and Objectives: To compare the effect of anxietyand depression on unilateral trans tibial amputeesthose who are using conventional and modular patellartendon bearing (PTB) prosthesis with stump exercises.Material and Methods: A sample of 40 persons withbelow knee amputation who were trained to wear prosthesiswere studied with an experimental comparativestudy design. Patients who were admitted atKempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences and ResearchCentre, Bangalore, K. S. Hegde Medical Academyand Research Centre Mangalore, (N=150) whounderwent unilateral transtibial, transfemoral and otheramputations between August 2009 - December 2011.To find out peri and postoperative prosthetic fitting, anxietyand depression level of transtibial amputees whowear conventional and modular PTB prosthesis. 3 yearsof experimental comparative study reveals that theoutcome measures of peri and post-operative anxietyand depression level while using conventional PTB prosthesiswith stump exercises and modular PTB prosthesiswith stump exercises on unilateral transtibialamputees. Results: The unilateral transtibial amputeeswho were trained with modular prosthesis along withstump exercises group patients anxiety and depressionlevels are reduced as compared to the unilateraltranstibial amputees who were trained with conventionalPTB prosthesis along with stump exercises. There is no significant difference seen in both the groupswhile giving stump exercises alone. Conclusion: Theunilateral transtibial amputees who were trained withmodular prosthesis along with stump exercises group, patient’s anxiety and depression levels are reduceddrastically.
