Needs Analysis of Curriculum and Instruction Master Degree Program

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to conduct a needs analysis study to form the basis for the curriculum designed for the Curriculum and Instruction (CI) master degree programs. For this purpose, it is aimed to determine the qualifications to be obtained by the students in the CI graduate program. This research is a descriptive research and qualitative research method was used. The study group consists of eight academicians who work at the Faculty of Education in Duzce University and 13 students who graduated from the Social Sciences Institute in Duzce University with a CI master degree or are in thesis process. Research data were collected using interview and focus group interview techniques. Content analysis method was used for the analysis of the data. Voice recordings were transcribed by researchers and encoded by two researchers separately. Reliability between encoders was 87%. Later, the codes were compared with each other and common categories were created. The research findings were grouped under four main categories, “Competencies of CI curriculum development dimension”, “Competencies of CI instruction dimension”, “Competencies of CI scientific research dimension” and “Competencies of CI skill and value dimension”. According to the results of the research, the competencies required in the CI master degree programs were determined and various suggestions were developed.
