Neutralization of Toluenediisocyanate Spillage - A Threat to Our Ecosystem
Journal Title: International Journal of Research in Chemistry and Environment (IJRCE) - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 4
Abstract
The paper deals with the relevant disposal methodology of Toluenediisocyanate spillage. The environment is at risk of exposure during handling of Toluenediisocyanate. Any accidental spills, large or small could be fatal. According to environmental protection agency, the threshold limit value of the said Isocyanate is 0.005 ppm. This chemical is regulated under the clean air act as a hazardous air pollutant and has been documented to cause asthma, lung damage, in severe cases, fatal reactions. There is a need for eco-friendly decontaminant which can neutralize Toluenediisocyanate and the resultant waste can be disposed under the Resource conservation and Recovery act (RCRA). Experiment was carried out for the said isocyanate spillage, covered with a solid carrier, composed of Saw dust (60 parts) and Fullers’ earth-china clay (40 parts). The clay absorbs Toluenediisocyanate (TDI) and the saw dust which is source of moisture, carboxylic acid, lignin reacts with isocyanate group to form polyurea and polyurethane. The resultant material was extracted with cyclohexane after 24hrs, 48hrs, 72 hrs and 96 hrs and then tested for free Toluenediisocyanate presence by Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. In this account we have mentioned the outcome of the experiment after different interval of time and in fact it was found that the suggested solid carrier is a suitable one which neutralizes the isocyanate group after 96 hrs.
