Non-Surgical Management Of Idiopathic Congenital Talipes Equino Varus By Ponseti Method

Abstract

Background: Idiopathic congenital Talipes Equino Varus (CTEV) occurs in 0.9-1/1,000 live births and half of these cases show bilateral involvement.Ponseti method is a useful conservative technique in the management of CTEV reducing the necessity of surgical interventions early in the child’s life. Objective: To describe the profile of children with CTEV, severity of deformity and treatment outcomes following Ponseti method. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted at the Department of Orthopaedics, Sri Venkateshwaraa Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Ariyur, Puducherry from April 2013 to May 2016 by following up 38 children aged 0-7 months with idiopathic C.T.E.V of who attended the Orthopaedic OPD for treatment. The deformity was classified according to Dimeglio grading and severity was assessed by Pirani scoring system. Results:Majority of the children were males (62.5%) and 81.3% of them had bilateral Club foot. Mean Pirani score at start of treatment was5.41±0.32 (Range 4-6). The functional outcomes following treatment adopting Ponseti method were excellent in 60.3% of cases. Conclusion:Ponseti method is an easy, effective efficient and economical mode of management of congenital idiopathic clubfoot well suited for children upto 7 months of age with deformity.
