Nonlinear frequency conversion in optical nanoantennas and metasurfaces: materials evolution and fabrication
Journal Title: Opto-Electronic Advances - Year 2018, Vol 1, Issue 10
Abstract
Nonlinear frequency conversion is one of the most fundamental processes in nonlinear optics. It has a wide range of applications in our daily lives, including novel light sources, sensing, and information processing. It is usually assumed that nonlinear frequency conversion requires large crystals that gradually accumulate a strong effect. However, the large size of nonlinear crystals is not compatible with the miniaturisation of modern photonic and optoelectronic systems. Therefore, shrinking the nonlinear structures down to the nanoscale, while keeping favourable conversion efficiencies, is of great importance for future photonics applications. In the last decade, researchers have studied the strategies for enhancing the nonlinear efficiencies at the nanoscale, e.g. by employing different nonlinear materials, resonant couplings and hybridization techniques. In this paper, we provide a compact review of the nanomaterials-based efforts, ranging from metal to dielectric and semiconductor nanostructures, including their relevant nanofabrication techniques.

Movable electrowetting optofluidic lens for optical axial scanning in microscopy
Optical axial scanning is essential process to obtain 3D information of biological specimens. To realize optical axial scanning without moving, the tunable lens is a solution. However, the conventional tunable lenses usu...
Multifunctional inverse sensing by spatial distribution characterization of scattering photons
Inverse sensing is an important research direction to provide new perspectives for optical sensing. For inverse sensing, the primary challenge is that scattered photon has a complicated profile, which is hard to derive a...
Fresnel incoherent correlation holography with single camera shot
Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH) is a self-interference based super-resolution three-dimensional imaging technique. FINCH in inline configuration requires an active phase modulator to record at least thr...
Iterative freeform lens design for prescribed irradiance on curved target
Current freeform illumination optical designs are mostly focused on producing prescribed irradiance distributions on planar targets. Here, we aim to design freeform optics that could generate a desired illumination on a...
Laser machining of transparent brittle materials: from machining strategies to applications
Transparent brittle materials such as glass and sapphire are widely concerned and applied in consumer electronics, optoelectronic devices, etc. due to their excellent physical and chemical stability and good transparency...
