NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE WATER DAMMING INFLUENCE ON THE GROUNDWATER SYSTEM IN THE AREA OF PROJECTED ATTENUATION RESERVOIR BOBOSZÓW, NYSA KŁODZKA RIVER CATCHMENT

Abstract
Attenuation reservoirs are common and one of the most effective parts of integrated flood protection systems since they are temporally able to reduce the outflow peak from a mountainous catchment. Water lifting within reservoirs results in alternations of groundwater flow velocities and fluxes, and it locally hampers groundwater drainage due to water dam building. Influence of water lifting in the area of projected attenuation reserve Boboszów in the upper part of the Nysa Kłodzka catchment was analysed based on the finite elements groundwater flow model. Results of the numerical simulations show an increase of groundwater level by about 1–2 m in the area below the water dam for the time of maximum water lifting. Modification of hydrogeological conditions due to water impoundments results in the increase of groundwater velocities by about one order of magnitude under the dam, and in a significant increase of groundwater fluxes in the vicinity of the dam.
