Abstract
Care becomes necessary during the entire childbirth process, and understanding what women have to say about their experiences in the childbirth process permits that practices are rethought. This study aimed to identify how to display the Components of Nursing Care in the speeches of the women about their birthing process. This is a qualitative study involving three public institutions of each state in southern Brazil from August to December of 2006 and 28 mothers as subjects, interviewed in rooming through semi-structured interview. The data were analyzed according to steps proposed by Creswell. The theoretical framework used to support the collection and analysis was the Components of Nursing Care proposed by Carraro, based on Semmelweis and Nightingale. The results indicate those aspects of the care of women in the birthing process, making it possible to be clear about their needs in order to qualify the care provided. Thus, their statements help to promote reflection and future changes in care provided by nursing staff and the entire health team.
