NUTRITIONAL EVALUATION OF JUNIOR FOOTBALL PLAYERS DEPENDING ON THE GLOBAL LEVEL OF SELF-EFFICACY OF THE ATHLETES

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the frequency of food product consumption depending on the level of self-efficacy of football players.Methods: The study included a group of 303 older juniors (18.17±0,61 years of age). The frequency of food consumption was classified as: several times a day (5), once a day (4), several times a week (3), several times per month (2), or rarer (1). Self-efficacy was determined using the Global Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). The examined group included athletes with moderate (55.44%) and high (44.55%) level of self-efficacy.Results: Spearman’s analysis of correlation revealed positive correlations between the self-efficacy and the frequency of consumption of whole wheat bread (p<0.01), brown rice (p<0.05), high-fat cottage cheese (p<0.05), and butter (p<0.01), as well as the inverse correlations with the frequency of poultry meat (p<0.05), and olive and plant oil (p<0.01) consump¬tion. Athletes characterized by high self-efficacy selected whole wheat bread (2.85 vs. 2.35; p<0.001), brown (1.56 vs. 1.29; p<0.001) and white rice (2.40 vs. 2.18; p<0.05), fruits (4.00 vs. 3.79; p<0.05), low-fat milk (3.38 vs. 3.05; p<0.05), low-fat (2.87 vs. 2.57; p<0.05) and high-fat cottage cheese (2.60 vs. 2.07; p<0.0001), butter (4.22 vs. 3.99; p<0.05), and sweetened carbonated drinks (2.87 vs. 2.66; p<0.05) significantly more frequently than those with a moderate level; moreover, they consumed poultry meat (2.89 vs. 2.96; p<0.05), sweets and pastries (3.47 vs. 3.70; p<0.05) less frequently. Conclusions: High self-efficacy promoted more balanced nutritional choices.
