Journal Title: Przegląd Historyczno-Oświatowy - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 1
Abstract
The paper presents the main threads of the pedeutological thought of Antonina Machczyńska who was the late 19th and early 20th century acclaimed author of pedagogical works. First and foremost, she was a teacher; hence, her views on the teaching profession were strongly supported by the experience she drew from her years of pedagogical work at the Teacher College in Lvov. She wrote a draft of pedagogical education for women. Describing a teacher’s duties, she put them into the context of national education. Issues of vocation and the duties of female teachers in rural schools were at the centre of her pedeutological reflection. Amongst the fundamental duties of female teachers she included the enlightenment and civic education of rural people. According to Machczyńska’s ideas, female teachers should fulfi l not only educational tasks but also play an important role in the child-rearing process. For that reason, in her opinion, teacher colleges should prepare female teachers to the profession in such a way as to prompt them to promote learning and culture in rural areas. Machczyńska placed the teaching profession within the general vision of the human being. Analysing the vocation and purpose of each individual, she defined tasks specific to the profession. Additionally, because she believed that these tasks can be fulfilled by women, she endorsed their pedagogical education.
