O Ormiance, która nie chciała być żoną dla męża. Proces o unieważnieniu małżeństwa w Mohylowie na Dniestrem w końcu XVIII wieku
Journal Title: Przegląd Wschodni - Year 2017, Vol 14, Issue 55
Abstract
The subject of the article is the unfortunate marriage of the Armenian merchant, Harutuina Szymonowicz and Regina Piotrovich in Mohyliv-Podilskyi in the years 1781–1789. The case was richly documented in the archives of the Armenian-Catholic archbishop’s consistory in Lviv (Lwów). The authors initially introduce the history of the city, its social physiognomy and the fate of the Armenian gmina in Mohyliv, presenting legal documentation, including family, neighbourly and diocesan relations, as well as individual portraits of persons engaged in the “divorce” process, especially details concerning the disobedient wife. Research on the matrimonial troubles of these types of individuals – from the point of view of great historical process, unknown and relatively anonymous – allows an expanded and more detailed view of the social history of such cities as Mohyliv-Podilskyi. An especially interesting matter in this case is the factual illustration of the Armenian community at the end of the 18th century, not only torn apart by the artificial border of the Partitions and its legal transformations, but also mentally situated at a point of contact between East and West. This is due to trade contacts in Istanbul, the presence of Armenian non-Uniates in nearby Bessarabia, or Osman rule on the other bank of the Dniester. Because of all this, the ethnic, religious and national character of this community became very complicated – in Polish Mohyliv in 1781, a Polish Armenian takes a bride from Istanbul on the basis of oriental wedding customs. The bride, on the other hand, struggles for her independence utilising local Polish law. Nearly a decade later, in 1789, they both turn to their pastor, the archbishop of the Armenian- Catholic Church (who resides in Austrian Lviv, another country) to intervene. An added dimension to the complicated political background is a different type of power configuration – between individual and community, which guarantees its members safety, but also relentless pursues its own rights and interests A full edition of all the legal documents concerning the case is included along with the article.
