Obesity – definition, epidemiology, pathogenesis

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2013, Vol 26, Issue 4

Abstract

Body weight is tightly regulated by complex homeostatic mechanisms. Obesity is a state in which energy intake chronically exceeds energy expenditure. It is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Body mass index (BMI) is a simple index that is commonly used to identify and classify obesity in adults.Obesity is a complex condition, one with serious social and psychological dimensions, that affects virtually all age and socioeconomic groups and threatens to overwhelm both developed and developing countries. In 2000, the number of obese adults has increased to over 300 million. In the obesity pathogenesis the central role play: genetic factors, environmental factors, social and cultural factors and hormonal state of organism. The rising prevalence of obesity is likely to result from contemporary lifestyle factors.
