Obesity – health and global challeng

Abstract
Obesity is a very serious public health problem in many countries. In Poland more than half of the adults have excessive body weight, while approx. 20% are obese. Overweight and obesity occur among 15-20% of children and adolescents. There has been observed the increased prevalence of excessive body weight in recent years.Obesity can lead to many serious health consequences, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes type 2 and some cancers. It can cause also mental health problems, especially in youth.The treatment of obesity and its complications and the costs of disability and premature mortality related to obesity are a significant strain on national budget.WHO and European Commission have developed many initiatives aimed to counteract obesity and reverse tendency of its growing prevalence. These initiatives are presented among others in Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, European Charter on Counteracting Obesity and White Paper: A strategy for Europe on Nutrition, Overweight and Obesity related health issues.Activities in this area in Poland are connected mainly with the realization of the National Programme for the Prevention of Overweight, Obesity and Non-Communicable Diseases through Diet and Improved Physical Activity POL-HEALTH. There is a need to continue and expand these activities in the near future.
