Obtaining farm animal embryos in vitro
Journal Title: Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences - Year 2012, Vol 21, Issue 2
Abstract
This paper reviews the basic knowledge about obtaining farm animal embryos in vitro with special focus on differences among species and application of this procedure in the future. In vitro production of farm animal embryos consists of in vitro maturation (IVM) of oocytes, in vitro fertilization (IVF) of matured oocytes, and in vitro culture (IVC) of embryos. Oocytes can be collected from live animals (by laparotomy, laparoscopy, Ovum Pick Up) or from slaughtered ones (by puncture, sectioning). Usually immature oocytes are isolated, and during IVM they reach maturity. Matured oocytes are cultured with sperm (IVF), leading to the formation of zygotes. In the case of fertilization problems (horse, pig), intracytoplasmic sperm injection is used. The zygotes are usually cultured (IVC) to the morula and blastocyst stages. These embryos can be transferred to recipients or frozen/vitrified. Offspring have been obtained after transfer of cattle, sheep, goat, pig and horse embryos. This procedure can be used in animal breeding, biotechnology, medicine, and basic research.

The effect of different dietary sodium levels on the growth performance of broiler chickens, gastrointestinal function, excreta moisture and tibia mineralization
The objective of this study was to determine the response of broiler chickens to different dietary sodium (Na) levels. The experiment was performed on 432 male Ross 308 chickens, kept in threetier battery cages, each wit...
The effects of caloric restriction and age on thyroid hormone signalling in the heart of rats
Thyroid hormones (TH) are believed to participate in adaptation of the heart to dietary caloric restriction (CR). The effect of CR on cardiac thyroid hormone receptors α and β (TRα and TR β) has been hitherto insufficien...
The effects of benzoic acid and essential oil compounds in combination with protease on the performance of chickens
T. Experiments were conducted to study the effect of benzoic acid and of essential oil blends in combination with protease on the growth performance of broiler chickens. In the first trial, the birds were divided into th...
The effect of training on plasma L-carnitine metabolism in purebred Arabian horses
The aim of this study was to evaluate how training affects plasma total, free and esterified L-carnitine concentrations in horses. The study was done on a total of 32 healthy, trained purebred Arabian horses. The 32 hors...
Influence of different dietary oil sources on performance and fatty acid profile of egg yolk in laying hens
Laying hens were fed diets containing sunflower, fish, linseed and rapeseed oil with 2 levels of inclusion (1.5 and 3.0%) for 12 weeks. Egg production, egg weight, feed intake, feed conversion and liveweight were not sig...
