Journal Title: Innowacje w Pielęgniarstwie i Naukach o Zdrowiu - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 3
Abstract
Introduction. Osteoarthritis is one of the main causes of disability and pain in the developed countries. ‘Degenerative changes’comes as a general term for degenerative changes in the joint characterized by painful limitation of its functions. These changes consist in premature wear-off and degeneration of tissues that make up the joint. The disease most commonly involves the knee joints, hip joints, the metacarpophalangeal joints of palms and inter vertebral joints. Aim. The aim of the research is to assess the level of acceptability of the disease by patients with osteoarthritis, and to determine the impact of factors that precondition the respective acceptability level of the disease. Material and methods. The study was conducted at the Regional Hospital in Plock. The study involved 100 patients in the Trauma and Orthopaedics. The research was carried out applying the estimative method and a diagnostic survey. The research tools were: the Scale of Acceptability for the Diseases and a questionnaire survey prepared by the author of this paper. Results. On the basis of the research it was found that patients with osteoarthritis accept the disease at the secondary level. The level of acceptability of the disease affects certain sociodemographic factors and health. Conclusions. 1. The acceptability of osteoarthritis does not depend significantly on gender, age, place of residence and any co-existing illnesses. 2. The acceptability of osteoarthritis depends most on education level of the respondents. Patients with secondary or higher education show a higher level of acceptability of the disease than patients who have obtained only the basic vocational education or primary education.
