Ocena potencjału nasiennego wybranych odmian hodowlanych Poa pratensis. Część I. Struktura plonu nasion

Abstract
The objective of the performed investigations was to evaluate the seed yield potential of selected Poa pratensis L. cultivars within the scope of the structure of seed yield including developmentof generative shoots, number of spikelets in the inflorescence, length of the inflorescence, number of flowers and seeds in the spikelet and efficiency of seed set as well. The investigationswere conducted in years 2002–2005 at the Experimental Station belonging to the Department of Grassland and Natural Landscape Sciences of the Poznań University of Life Science situatedat Brody. The experiments comprised 13 selected cultivars of Poa pratensis. The nvestigations were conducted on both Polish and foreign genotypes which were or still are cultivated in Poland.In 2002, the one-factorial experiment in two epetitions on 16 m2 plots (size 1.6 m × 10 m) was established. The standard technology of seed production of Poa pratensis was applied. Seeds weresown in row spacing of 40 cm using seed rate of 7 kg ha–1. During growing season the fertilization was applied at the level of N – 120 kg ha–1, P2O5 – 40 kg ha–1, K2O – 50 kg ha–1. Biometricmeasurements were carried out during three years of growing for seeds. They comprised density and height of generative shoots, number of spikelets in the inflorescence, length of the inflorescence, number of flowers and kernels in the spikelet as well as efficiency of seed set in the spikelet (floret site utilisation). The performed experiments showed that the examined cultivars of Poa pratensis differ significantly in the density and length of generative shoots, the number of spikelets per inflorescence,the length of the inflorescence and the number of flowers per spikelet during three years of growing for seeds influencing the seed yield potential of particular varieties. In the case of number ofseeds per spikelet and efficiency of seed set the Poa pratensis cultivars were significant in the first and third year of utilization while in the second the differences were not significant. It was foundthat lawn cultivars develop significantly more generative shoots per 1 m2, lower height of those shoots and less spikelets per inflorescence than fodder ones. Development of higher number ofgenerative shoots, especially by lawn cultivars, may contribute to the formation of panicles with an unfavourable structure and consequently have a negative effect on seed yield. An example of thisdependence is the Conni cultivar. The breeding work strategy to obtain new Poa pratensis creations developing more seeds per generative shoot will be more important in breeding of fodder varieties.
