Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction: An odontogenic keratocyst is anoninflammatory lesion which is derived from epithelial odontogenic cells. Since 2005, such lesions have been classified as benign tumors by the WHO dueto their aggressive behavior, histology, and new information regarding their genetics.Aim of the study: To evaluate patients treated for odontogenic keratocysts in the Department of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery, Medical University of Warsaw, with regard to the extent of the surgery and the recurrence rate. Material and methods: A total of 37 patients with histopathologically confirmed odontogenic keratocysts were treated in the Craniomaxillofacial Department of Medical University of Warsaw between 2000 and 2009. Results: Males constituted the majority among 37 patients, who were aged between 14 to 78 years. The peak of disease’s detection was observed in the third decade of life. Most of the lesions were located in the mandible. Recurrence of the disease was observed in seven patients. Conclusion: Patients who were diagnosed with an odontogenic keratocyst should be subject to careful, long-term observation because of the relatively frequent, often delayed, incidence of recurrences, and the possibility of neoplastic metaplasia. In the cases of recurrence of the disease, radical procedure such as partial resection, or even hemiresection of the jaw, should be considered.
