Journal Title: Journal of the Human and Social Science Researches - Year 2012, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

Ömer Seyffetin was a poet who made important contributions to our social, political and cultural life not only through his stories but also by his writing related to his opinions and thoughts on language, literature and art that he gave utterance. According to Ömer Seyfettin, the literature after Şinasi cannot teach us how to write naturally (natively). In spite of all the positive properties in Namık Kemal‟s works, he states that the prose he wrote to show art was an opponent to the utmost for time‟s pleasure. Similarly, although the performers (poets) of literature of Cedide (Edebiyat-I Cedide) admitted the contemporary genres of the Western literature without spoiling, they ignored the natural (native) language which is the most important and essential a condition of the Western literature. Ömer Seyfettin exemplified (cited) the stories of Âşık Garip, Leyla and Mecnun, Tahir and Zühre, Âşık Kerem, Şahmeran etc., and evaluated these works not to be read as a rather deficiency. He comprehended the form of a real Turkish prose in these old story books and stated that the traces of our natural prose in these primitive tales. Whoever wants to write should certainly read these works and thus, should understand the natural language once spoken how to be written as well. He thought that the works to be read both from Folk Literature and from old and new literature would not be sufficient enough to teach how to write naturally as well. Our spirituality is national and our materiality is internationality. Our topics (issues) and emotions could be national, but literature types could be national. The genres in the literature of civilization where we live are the same. The rules of genres of the stories, novels and literature etc. are the rules of Western literature. The technique of prose and verse is in the west. The greatest masterworks are in the west. The mystery of art is in the classics of Greek-Latin. Plainness, purity, sincerity and explicitness are essential of these great works.
