On Determining the Qur’anic Suras as Meccan or Medinan: Sūrat al-Ḥajj as a Case Study
Journal Title: Ankara Üniversitesi İlahiyat Fakültesi Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 58, Issue 1
Abstract
This article contains two discussions. The first one is to determine whether or not the features of Meccan and Medinan suras presented in the classical ulūm al-Qurān sources are general descriptions. The second one is to examine which source is more decisive in determining the revelation period of a sura (i.e. Meccan or Medinan): is it the stylistic features and the content of the suras or the riwāyas about the historical contexts of verses? This article tackles these two issues by analyzing the sūrat al-Ḥajj as a case in point. To that end, I compare 14 classical sources in ulūm al-Qurān with a view to finding out the course of development of the feature of the suras over the years in a comparative fashion and to see what this amount to for the sūrat al-Ḥajj. After analyzing the stylistic features and the riwāyas pertaining to the historical contexts of the verses, I basically conclude that the riwāyas are more decisive in determining its revelation period and that sūrat al-Ḥajj is Medinan.
