Abstract
It is substantiated in the article that the poetics of short fiction of the late 19th — early 20th century formed the model of existential thinking. There were made some observations on the characteristics of the embodiment of the existential philosophizing in the works of the writers of the background (M. Grushevskyi, J. Lipa, A. Plushch, L. Janowski, etc.). Particular attention was paid to the analysis of literary motive of death, which is present in most works of short fiction of this period.
