Opinions of medical staff on hospital information system implemented in medical health care setting

Abstract
The majority of human activities are successful provided one possesses adequate information that allows making proper decisions. This is especially important in the field of medicine where so much depends upon the proper transfer of information and whether it is complete and reliable. Sometimes it is the matter of a patient’s life, even death. Continuous increase of information gathered during the diagnostic-therapeutic process makes medical institutions implement and modernize information systems.The purpose of study was to discover what medical staff think about IT systems implemented in health care settings. A group of 100 medical staff members (64% were women), aged 20–60 years, were surveyed. The study was conducted by means of a diagnostic survey which used a questionnaire developed for that purpose. The material was analyzed descriptively and statistically. Contingency Tables and χ2 tests were used, p<0.05 was assumed to be statistically significant.More than a half (55%) respondents evaluated the sector of medical care in Poland as well prepared and ready to have HIS implemented, and 6.0% respondents evaluated it as very well prepared. Among the strategic aims, the respondents reported more efficient hospital management (43%), and every third respondent (29%) mentioned easier work due to HIS.According to the majority of them (85%), HIS positively affects the efficiency of managing a medical institution. The majority of medical staff stated that the sector of health care is well prepared for the implementation of HIS. Almost a half of the respondents believed that IT contributes to more efficient management of a health care institution, and every third respondent claimed it facilitates their work. In general, the implementation of IT is evaluated as good and very good; however, there are also those who present a negative attitude.Key wordsopinions, information system, medical health care
