Optimism and health

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction and objective of the study: This article describes the most common concepts of optimism and contemporary definitions of health. The diversity of approaches and ongoing interest in the scope of problems concerning optimism indicate that despite many years of research it is still difficult to define optimism. However, regardless of the adopted definition and applied tool, most of the studies relating to optimism have led to the same conclusions. The aim of the presented study is to explain the relationship between optimism and health. Brief description the state of knowledge: Optimism influences many areas of our lives, but the most important of them is physical and mental. As one of the personal resources it favours an effective coping with stress. Optimists more often take preventive measures and take medicines when ill. They experience more positive emotions and events. They also more often seek support from others in a difficult situation. Moreover, optimism is also conducive to the openness to changes, and therefore reinforces adaptation skills. In addition, it strengthens the immune system and exerts an effect on self-reported health. Summary: Many studies confirmed the beneficial effect of optimism on physical and mental wellbeing. Perhaps the introduction of training aimed at strengthening an optimistic way of thinking could contribute to an increase in the effectiveness of health prophylaxis.Key words: optimism, health, pro-health properties
