Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2016, Vol 66, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction. During routine procedures performed under general anaesthesia with the use ofa laryngoscope spoon for an endotracheal intubation, the oral tissue can get damaged.Aim of the study. To assess the damage to teeth which occurred during the intubation and prophylacticprocedures performed by the anaesthetists in cases of oral cavity injuries. Methods and methods. The questionnaire-based study was conducted among 52 Polish anaesthetistsin terms of damage to the oral cavity.Results. Teeth damage caused by intubation was observed in 63% of the respondents in the recent5 years of their clinical practice. The majority of physicians (77%) indicated the soft tissuetrauma and the fracture of tooth hard tissues as the most frequent treatment complication. The recommended need to use protective mouthguards during intubation was reported by 56% of the respondents. In spite of the recommendation most of anaesthetists do not apply the devise in theireveryday practice.Conclusions. Damage to oral cavity tissues is a common complication of the treatment involvingintubation. Prior to surgery performed under general anaesthesia and after assessingthe difficulty in intubation, anaesthetists should consider providing the patients who are at highrisk of dental injuries with protective occlusal mouthguards.
