Organization of preconception and perinatal care as a determinant of health of family and society

Abstract

Introduction: Consideration of medical aspects of health of women and their children, with legal, economic, social and political conditioning, presented from the aspect of various disciplines, allows a wide and comprehensive approach to the health of a family and society. Changes caused by the reorganization of health care in Poland in recent years has resulted in the fragmentation and instability of institutions providing health care for a woman and the family. Objective: The objective of the study is an attempt to confirm the effect of adequate organization of preconception and perinatal care and legal regulations in this area and the effect on the health of family and society. Description of the state of knowledge: Preconception and perinatal care in pregnancy, as well as during delivery and first weeks of life after birth, is of crucial importance for the optimum development of a child, and exerts an effect on the entire adult life. In recent years, an increase has been observed in awareness – both social, individual and political – concerning the factors affecting the health situation of women and the health of children, and in consequence, the health of society, especially the responsibility of individuals, social groups, and various institutions and decision makers. Summing up: Evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of the performance of tasks on behalf of mother and child by health care organization facilities should be implemented into common practice on the basic, regional, and all-Polish levels. The most beneficial, from the medical as well as economic aspect, should be the implementation of preventive actions, which would be aimed not only at prevention of obstetric pathologies and women’s diseases, but also at optimizing health promoting actions on a wide scale.Key words: preconception care, perinatal care, health, family, society
