Orthodontists in Poland and in Lublin voivodeship

Abstract
AIM: to assess whether the orthodontic manpower issufficient in Poland with particular focus on the Lublinregion, the number of orthodontists, their age and distributionwas analyzed and the prognosis concerning possibleunemployment among orthodontists was performed. MATERIALAND METHODS: the material included PolishStatistical Annals for the year 2003, data from the MainStatistical Department, data from the Central Register ofSpecialists kept by the Doctors Chamber and the report ofEFOSA concerning orthodontic manpower within Europe.RESULTS: in Poland, with the population over 38 millionand the number of specialists of 795, the orthodontist:population ratio is 1:48073. In the Lublin region thereare 57 orthodontists working full-time and the ratio is1:38543. The distribution of specialists in the Lublin regionis uneven. The largest number works in large towns:33 specialists - 54.3% of all the orthodontists in the voivodeshipwork in Lublin. The biggest group of orthodontists isthat of 35 to 40-year-olds. Markedly smaller are groups of50 to 60-year-olds and the younger 29 to 35-year-olds. Theorthodontists in the Lublin voivodeship is uneven and concentratesaround bigger towns. And only in the capital ofthe region orthodontists might find it difficult to get employed.(Orthod. Forum 2005; 1:111-17)
