OTTOMAN TALISMANS IN CONSIDERATION OF SOME SAMPLES IN JERUSALEM AND JAFFA

Abstract
It is encountered with some components as a kind of talisman for winning the beneficence and dispelling the malice in Ottoman society in consideration of the extant works of art and the written sources about the subject. It is understood that the names of Ashab al-Kahf known also as ‘Seven Sleepers’, the hexagram known also as ‘the seal of Solomon’, the sword called Dhulfaqar associated with Ali ibn Abi Talib and the hand motive entitled ‘Panja Al al-Aba’ or ‘the hand of Fatimah’ are often prefered among these talismans. The first of talismans to be considered within the context of this study is an incription which has the names of Ashab al Kahf in a cartouche of Sulaiman Pasha Fountain attached to the Mahmudiya Complex in Jaffa. It is important that the names for being on a structure like a fountain and this study put mainly emphasis on this talisman for that reason. The other talismans are a hand shaped metal amulet, a metal seal in the form of Dhulfaqar and a magic medicinal bowl ornamented with the seal of Solomon exhibited in the Islamic Museum in the court of Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem.
