Oxidative stress as a significant contributor in the pathogenesis and white cell changes in pre-eclampsia: A study in Owerri, Nigeria
Journal Title: Journal of Research in Biology - Year 2011, Vol 1, Issue 3
Abstract
Haeomatological and oxidative stress parameters were measured in Pre-eclamptic [PE] women attending clinic in owerri South Eastern Nigeria. The effect of Pre-eclampsia on these parameters was assessed by juxtaposition with similar indices in normal pregnant and normal non-pregnant women. Result showed that pre-eclampia resulted in significant decrease (P< 0.05) in Lymphocyte count. There was a significant increase in total white blood cell count, neutrophil count and mixed differential count. Pre-eclamptic resulted in significant increase (P<0.05) in erythrocyte lipid peroxidation, met-haemoglobin concentration and percentage hydrogen peroxide-induced haemolysis. The result indicate that oxidative stress is a significant contributor in the pathogenesis and white cell changes seen in pre-eclampsia.

The monthly changes of chloroplast pigments content in selected plant species exposed to cement dust pollution
Chloroplast pigments were shown to be very sensitive to various environmental influences. Changes in chlorophyll and carotenoid content were investigated in selected plant species exposed to alkaline dust emitted by the...
Phytochemical and antibacterial studies on the aqueous extract of Eucalyptus gomphocephala DC
This work aims to find out the molecule responsible for the good activity against the strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa reflected in a pre work done on the phytochemical study of aqueous extract of Eucalyptus gomphocepha...
Effect of Chromolaena odorata leaf extract on haematological profiles in Salmonellae typhi infested Wistar rats
Haematological indices provide an insight about the internal environment of a given organism. In this present study, the possible anti-haemototxic effect of Chromolaena odorata on Salmonellae typhi – induced haematotoxic...
Population density of Indian giant squirrel Ratufa indica centralis (Ryley, 1913) in Satpura National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India
Information on population and distributional status of Indian giant squirrel Ratufa indica centralis is poorly known from central Indian hills. The species is endemic to India and widely distributed in Western Ghats, Eas...
Identification of prokaryotic organisms in goat rumen based on metagenomic DNA sequences
A protocol for isolating pure DNA from goat ruminal fluid was developed. DNA was partially digested using ApoI enzymes and ligated onto Lambda ZAP II Predigested EcoR l/CIAP-treated vector to make a metagenomic DNA libra...
