Journal Title: Przegląd Wschodni - Year 2014, Vol 13, Issue 51
Abstract
isited Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia (1993), Georgia (1999), Ukraine (2001), Kazakhstan (2001), Armenia (2001) and Azerbaijan (2002). In each country (besides Azerbaijan) he met with Poles living in those countries and spoke to them in Polish. There have been very few attempts by scholars to research the influence of the election of a Polish Pope. His meetings with Poles and people of Polish heritage living in the aforementioned countries and his influence on their attitudes towards religion and national identity have also been rarely discussed. Those attempts that were accomplished concluded that his influence was visible through strengthened manifestations of faith and self-identification with the Polish nationality. At the turn of 2011–2012, an attempt was made to analyse the influence that Pope John Paul II’s meetings with Poles and people of Polish heritage in Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine had on their attitudes towards religion and nationality. A questionnaire was utilized for this research and emailed to Polish intelligentsia circles in those three countries. In analysing the respondents’ answers we can perceive the following reactions to meeting the Pope: individual and community feelings of joy, a prevailing climate of goodwill during meetings, deeper feelings of belonging to the Church community and Polish nationality, pride at sharing religious and national identity with the Pope, an accumulation of positive experiences, feelings of hope for the future, awakening of social activity, feelings of safety and mental relaxation as a result of belonging to a great mass of people identifying with a singular goal and accepting the same values, awakening of feelings of freedom and subjectivity, elimination of feelings of fear, unblocking of mental energy and courage to reveal their faith and beliefs, recognizing new tasks and responsibilities as a result of the Pope’s teachings. The general effect of meetings with Pope John Paul II on people from the former republics of the USSR can be characterized as widereaching social psychotherapy.
