PARACETAMOL IN PREVENTION OF POSTOPERATIVE SORE THROAT- AN OBSERVATIONAL STUDY

Journal Title: Journal of Evidence Based Medicine and Healthcare - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 57

Abstract

BACKGROUND Patients sometimes complain of soreness of throat following tracheal extubation. Different analgesic and anaesthetic formulations have been employed to treat and prevent it. We attempted to study the effect of intravenous Paracetamol premedication in preventing it. MATERIALS AND METHODS With permission from Institutional Ethics Committee and written informed consent from patients, this single blind study was conducted on 80 ASA adult subjects of both sexes of ASA Grades I and II who needed general anaesthesia with endotracheal intubation. The patients were randomly divided into two groups of 40 each. Group P patients were given intravenous Paracetamol infusion as premedication while the Group C were studied as the control group. Standard identical anaesthetic techniques were employed for both the groups. Following recovery from anaesthesia, the patients were checked for sore throat and the severity of it at 0,2,6 and 24 hours using verbal rating scale and the data was statistically analysed. RESULTS Inj. Paracetamol decreased incidences of sore throat up to 2 hours following surgery. IV Paracetamol decreased the severity of postoperative sore throat. In those patients in Group P who suffered from sore throat, the severity of sore throat was mild in nature in more than 80% cases at all points of observation. No patient in Group P complained of severe or very severe sore throat. CONCLUSION IV Paracetamol premedication attenuates the incidence and severity of postoperative sore throat.
