Pathogenesis of Cerebrovascular Malformations and Anti-Ki-67 (MIB-1) Proliferating Index
Journal Title: Journal of Neurological Sciences-Turkish - Year 2005, Vol 22, Issue 3
Abstract
The pathogenesis of cerebrovascular malformations is currently unknown. Lately recent researchs suggest that their pathogenesis and development might be due to a series of factors taking part in angiogenesis. Angiogenic growth factors including vascular endothelial growth factor, proliferating nuclear cell antigen, Ki-67, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), VEGF receptor (VEGFR) Flk-1 have been demonstrated in cerebrovascular malformations. Until now, in the relevant literature only two studies about anti-Ki-67 proliferating index (MIB-1) at cavernous hemangioma (CH) have been cited. However, these particular articles had no word on Ki-67 reactivity of endothelials cells in cavernous hemangioma. The mainstay of this study is definition of Ki-67 and p53 reactivity in cavernous hemangioma (CH), arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and capillary telangiectasia (CT). Paraffin embedded sections stained immunohistochemically with antibodies to Ki-67 and P53 in selected cases representing CH (n=14), AVM (n=11) and CT (n=2) were analyzed. Labeling indices for Ki-67 were found to be immunopositively reacting in endothelial cells of 5 cases of CH (45%) and 7 cases of AVM(50%). This findings emphasizes a remarklably higher ratio of proliferating cell pool in AVM than that of CH cases. From the point of understanding importance and impact of proliferating cell population in pathogenesis, a systematic investigation using a wide battery of antibodies for other molecular angiogenic factors should be applied for better understanding of these curious entities.
