Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 10
Abstract
Introduction: The autoimmune polyglandular syndromes (APS) represent a group of disorders characterized by the presence of a combination of a variety of autoimmune diseases.Aim of the study: To evaluate the condition of the oral cavity in patients with different types of APS.Materials and methods: Oral hygiene as well as the condition of the mucous membrane, gums and teeth with regard to developmental disturbances of the enamel were evaluated in 21 individuals (aged 7-22 years), with diagnosed or suspected APS. Saliva tests and Candida diagnostics were also performed. Results: Neglected oral hygiene and gingivitis were revealed in 14 patients. Mucous lesions were found in 15 patients including all APS-1 patients. Oral candidiasis and angular cheilitis were the most frequent findings, followed by leukoplakia, melanoplakia, ulcerative changes and geographic tongue. Developmental disturbances of the enamel were diagnosed in 11 patients. Conclusions: Oral pathological lesions are frequent occurrences in patients with APS-1. Alterations of the clinical picture of different types of APS were also observed. It indicates a relationship between the specifictypeofAPSsyndromesandoralcavitycondition. There is a clear need for this research to be continued.
