PEDIATRIC MALIGNACIES – PROBLEMS WITH DIAGNOSIS

Journal Title: Przegląd Pediatryczny - Year 2008, Vol 38, Issue 3

Abstract

Malignant neoplasms are rare diseases of childhood but they are still one of the most frequent causes of death in this age group. Treatment results of children with these diseases have improved significantly in the last 30 years. Despite recent improvements in the diagnostics and treatment of malignant diseases, since 1990 a stagnation of results has been observed. Intensification of chemotherapy, supportive care, introduction of new medicinal products still do not contribute greatly to further improvement in treatment results. As primary prophylaxis is not an issue in improving outcome in pediatric oncology, early diagnosis is very important. Unspecific signs and symptoms, lack of knowledge in their recognition among general practitioners and other specialists, lack of screening for the most common tumors in children make the disease diagnosis difficult to establish and delayed. Moreover, there is a growing number of survivors of childhood cancer and late effects of treatment in respect of their physical and psychosocial status represent a new problem for health care providers of different specialties. There is a great need to educate general practitioners, pediatricians and physicians of other specialties in the field of diagnostics of childhood malignancies as well as in the field of late effects of anti-cancer treatment.
