PERADENIYA ACADEMICS OF THE EARLY DAYS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO SINHALA STUDIES

Journal Title: Social Affairs - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 7

Abstract

The contribution of the University of Peradeniya to the theatre and literary arts is well known. The ‘Golden Era’ of Peradeniya was characterized by a succession of truly phenomenal works in the felds of fction, poetry, drama and other forms of literary creativity by towering fgures such as Sarachchandra, Amarasekara, and Gunasinghe. However, it appears that the general belief is that Peradeniya’s achievements during this ‘golden era’ were confned to these areas and did not extend beyond them. The scholarly achievements of the Department of Sinhala during the 50s and 60s have not received the recognition they deserve. This paper is an attempt to fll that void by bringing to light the critical contributions of Peradeniya academics particularly in the feld of Linguistics during the hay days of the University.
