Performance Evaluation of Unreinforced Masonry Walls under Lateral Loading
Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 12
Abstract
Recent earthquakes have indicated that masonry buildings are not resistant against earthquake due to high weight and low ductility and need seismic rehabilitation. For presenting optimal plan of seismic rehabilitation, recognition of building’s vulnerability and its present position is important. Most attentions of engineers in terms of retrofitting are focused on retrofitting of concrete and steel buildings while masonry buildings suffer from the most damages due to application extent when an earthquake took place. Therefore, vulnerability analysis of masonry buildings under effect of earthquake is important and this study aims to investigate their behavior by the limited components method and dynamically and by using Abaqus software for two model groups of masonry walls of 3 and 4 meters length and height to length rates (H/L) of 0.55, 0.7, 0.85, 1, 1.15, and 1.3. obtained results showed that by increase of H/L ratio amount of movement of lateral wall increases and one should avoid from using masonry walls with ratio of H/L?1.
