Perioperative Anaesthesic Concerns for Bariatric Surgeries
Journal Title: Indian Journal of Anesthesia and Analgesia - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 5
Abstract
As bariatric surgeries is being accepted as safe procedure in India, it demands anesthesiologists to spruce up their knowledge and expertise as they play a vital role in safe perioperative patient management. This would require a thorough understanding of the pathophysiologic changes, surgical procedures and anesthesia case management for morbidly obese patients. The anesthetic management may be complicated by various comorbidities associated with obesity. Intubation, maintenance of oxygenation, fluid and pain management may be particularly challenging. In our experience, with proper perioperative care and vigilant monitoring, the incidence of intraoperative and postoperative morbidities and mortalities can be reduced. This study describes the anaesthetic experience in 103 consecutive patients of either sex with average body mass index (BMI) of more than 46.5kg/m2 who underwent laparoscopic bariatric surgery in the form of gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and mini-gastric bypass at our institution. Data analyzed included demographic profile, comparison of BMI and ASA classification and associated medical problems. There were no incidences of life threatening complications. We conclude that with proper perioperative care and monitoring the outcome of bariatric patients is excellent.

Comparison of Proseal Laryngeal Mask Airway Versus Endotracheal Tube in Anaesthetized Adult Patients
Endotracheal tube (ETT) is always considered as a standard device to keep an airway patent during surgery. Airway management of patients has also progressed form endotracheal tube to lesser invasive laryngeal mask airway...
Alfentanil in Elective Caesarean Sections under General Anaesthesia: Maternal Haemodynamic Changes Due to Intubation
Background: Opioids administered before caesarean section under general anaesthesia reduce maternal stress response related to intubation and surgery but may decrease the Apgar score after delivery and when opioids are u...
Evaluation of Fentanyl as an Adjuvant in Ultrasound Guided Supraclavicular Brachial Plexus Block
Background & Objectives: Supraclavicular brachial plexus blocks have been performed effectively using local anaesthetic agents alone for upper limb surgeries. The Primary objective of this study is to determine whether t...
A Comparison Study Quality of Anaesthesia for Lower Limb Orthopaedic Surgery: Bupivacaine with Adjuvant Clonidine versus Bupivacaine with Adjuvant Midazolam
Background: Spinal anesthesia is the most commonly used anesthesia for orthopedic surgery. Despite of using long acting local anesthetic like Bupivacaine, the duration of anesthesia is short. Therefore, various drug comb...
