PHOTOTEXT AND THE GENERIC SPECIFITY OF LITERATURE

Abstract

The relationship between literature and photography is one of the most important trends of research of intermediality. Specificity of the realization of phototext in various literary works is determined by their generic properties. Just as photography stops the moment, the lyric poem concentrates on the moment. Lyric is characterized by reflections of the lyrical subject and abstraction from details, one text, as a rule, represents one situation related to photography. Lyrical cycles and books of poems are structurally associated series of photographs. In epic genres, phototext differs in quantity and variability; in large-volume works there are different lines of phototext. Photographs belong to a fictional world and usually depict fictional characters. In a number of cases, the phototext embraces the whole narrative as a basis of its plot and composition, but more often localized in distinct episodes. The epic text gives the widest possibilities for the connection between the different time plans through the change of narrators and points of view, the combination of episodes, the reflections of characters and the authorial disgressions. Reflexions about photography in the epic text assimilate with critical genres. Drama is characterized by the representation of the process of photography and the image of photographer. A photograph can be present on the stage as detail of an interior or projected onto a screen. Commenting on photos by the characters gives an opportunity to get an idea of the image without referring to visual details. So, in every literary genre, the phototext has its own specifics, consisting in the predominance of certain modes of representation, themes, motifs, characters, relation to reality and the author.
