Physical activity of patients with a primary open-angle glaucoma filtration
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 4
Abstract
Background. Glaucoma is a serious eye disease which approximately 68 million people around the world suffer from and which, despite intensive treatment, can lead to total blindness. The most important factor of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) include an elevated intraocular pressure. Among other reasons, which may predispose to the development of the disease, there may be a low level of regular physical activity (RPA). A low RPA may not only be a factor of occurrence of glaucoma but also a factor of progression of disease in people with POAG. In the scientific literature there is a lack of data on current and past RPA in patients suffering from glaucoma. The aim of the study is to characterize physical activities (PA) undertaken currently and in the past by people with POAG. Material and methods. We studied 107 adults aged 61-75 years, where the group being investigated included 24 men (M) and 83 women (W) suffering from POAG and 125 as the comparison group including M 38 and W 87 at the same age not treated for glaucoma and without the occurrence of POAG in the immediate family. The current physical activity (CPA) was assessed on the basis of the Seven-Day Physical Activity Recall Questionnaire and physical activity (PA) in the past was characterized by Historical Leisure Activity Questionnaire. Anthropometric data was used to calculate the subjects’weight-growth Body Mass Index(BMI) [kg/m2].Results and Conclusions. PA, both current and past, of patients with POAG and without glaucoma is low. CPA of intensity 1,5 METs (light activity) was the largest percentage of total energy expenditure in the two groups: with POAG and without POAG, both among M (60,6% vs 63,2% respectively; p>0,05) and among W (61,2% vs 65,2% respectively; p<0,008). CPA of intensity 1 METs (sleeping) showed an significantly more in people with POAG then healthy individuals, both M (34,6% vs 30,2%; p<0,003) and W (32,4% vs 29,5%; p<0,005). CPA of intensity ≥4 METs (moderate, hard and very hard) constituted a very small percentage of total energy expenditure of the subjects and was lower but not significantly in patients with POAG, in comparison with patients without POAG, in M (5,2% vs 7,2%; p>0,05) and in W (1,5% vs 3,3%; p>0,05). PA undertaken in the past was significantly lower among patients with POAG, compared with the control group. The number of physically active people in the past, was statistically significantly lower among patients with POAG, both among M (45,8% vs 76,3%: p<0,046) and among W (34,9% vs 59,38%; p<0,0001). Most types of PA undertaken in the past in studied individuals involved team games, classes at the health club, running, swimming and gardening. It is possible that a very low PA undertaken in the past by the people with POAG might one of the risk factors for developing the disease.
