Physical availability of alcohol and its harmful health consequences

Abstract

Introduction. Aim of this paper is the initial attempt to assess relationship between physical availability of alcohol and its harmful health consequences in Poland Material and methods. Regression of time series 1965–2003 of a number of alcohol outlets on first hospitalizations due to alcohol mental disorders and on liver cirrhosis mortality among men in their productive ages. Procedure of autoregression was applied to eliminate impact of autocorrelation in time series. Results. Statistically significant relationship between physical availability of alcohol and selected harm indicators was found with particularly strong impact in the periods of large changes in availability.
