PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES TO MAXIMAL EXERTION IN JUWENILE TENNIS PLAYER
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2010, Vol 26, Issue 4
Abstract
Background. The aim of this study was to examine physical capacity and acute biological cost of exhaustive laboratory exertion in juvenile (10 years) male tennis player.Material and methods. 10-years old male tennis player underwent the incremental exercise-test until refusal. For hormone determination capillary blood from earlobe was sampled at time point as follows: in the morning (8:00), prior to graded incremental test: at 10:30 and ten minutes before exercise-test at 11:00, within 3-minute of recovery, and in the morning of the next day. During exercise-test blood lactate levels (LA) were determined directly following each of 3-minute bouts of increased intensity, which were separated by 30 sec. interruptions. Heart rate (HR) and oxygen uptake rate (VO2) were monitored throughout the whole test.Results. The maximal values of: power output (140 W, 3.46 W/kg), LA (9.2 mmol/L), HR (189 beats/minute), VO2max (50.9 ml•kg-1•min-1) and self-reported rating of perceived exertion (20 scores of Borg scale) were attained during the last 7th bout, which lasted only 2 minutes. Morning testosterone levels were typical for early stage of pubertal males. Its level recorded day after the test (0.83 nmol/L) was lower compared to the initial value (1.25 nmol/L), while morning cortisol increased from 171 to 290 nmol/L after exercise study despite overnight recovery. Morning anabolic-catabolic indexes were over 2.5-fold lower following the exertion. Conclusions. The results showed well physical fitness, however, directions of the morning hormonal changes suggested the high biological cost of maximal exertion, and insufficient overnight recovery.
