Phytochemical analysis and in-vitro antibacterial activity of Swertia chirata whole plant in different solvents
Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 12
Abstract
The pe t rol eum e the r , chloroform, a c e tone and me thanol ext r a c t of Swertia Chirata (whole plant) were evaluated for antibacterial activity against medically important bacteria viz Staphylococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus Staphylococcus epidermides, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus subtilis, The in-vitro antibacterial activity was performed by agar disc-diffusion method. The petroleum ether, chloroform, extract were in-active against test organism. The acetone and methanol both extract showed antibacterial activity but the Methanol extract posses better activity than acetone extract against test organism. The phytochemical analysis revealed that the maximum bioactive compounds were present in methanol extract. It contains presence of tannins, glycosides, flavonoids, alkaloids
