Phytochemical composition and termiticidal effects of aqueous extract of raphiafarinifera seed

Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2016, Vol 13, Issue 2

Abstract

The seed of Raphiafarinifera was subjected to phytochemical screening for chemical components after being extracted in aqueous solution. The chemical components found present in the seed are, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, carborhydrates, steroids and cardiac glycosides. Portions of the extract was diluted to different concentrations (15, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mg/L) and a control. The experiment was divided into six treatment levels and three replicates. The termites were exposed to the different concentrations to examine the mortal effect of Raphiafarinifera on the termites. The result showed that the seed extract was toxic to the termites. The extract caused a concentration and time dependent mortality and also changes in the behavior of the termites after a brief period of contact. The result obtained showed that the seed of the Raphia palm is a potential source of medicinal drugs as well as a termiticide. However, the medicinal use of the plant should be taken into consideration after further investigations to ascertain the dosage level, since some of the phytochemical components have both positive and negative implications.
