PLACE ATTACHMENT OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN RELATION WITH THEIR TIME PERSPECTIVES

Abstract

This study was done to better understand how and in which way time perspectives are connected with place attachment in young people. It also aimed to look at the peculiarities of bonds between different types of attachment to residence and different types of time orientations (present, past, future). Place attachment is defined as the affective link that people establish with specific settings, where they tend to remain and where they feel comfortable and safe. In order to explore this area, questionnaire was applied to a sample of 150 young people, aged 18–33, with different duration of residence in city (average length=12,75 years). Statistic software was used to analyze and interpret the survey results. In the paper sample was divided on three groups with different characteristics of levels and types of attachment to residence with using cluster analyze («non-attached», «attached» and «active attached»). Obtained results showed that in group of active attached people to their residence there was a higher level of time perspective on positive past than in group of people who are not attached. Also whole sample has tendency on orientation on future. In first group («non-attached») the formation of attachment to residence associated with future and hedonistic present; attachment to place of childhood with positive past; lack of attachment has reversed link with positive past. In the group of «attached» young people the quantity of such relationships is smaller: traditional attachment is reversed associated with hedonistic present; emotional attachment to residence is related with orientation on future. The last one group («active attached») has the next relations: traditional attachment is associated with future and fatalistic present; active attachment is linked with hedonistic present and fatalistic present; lack of attachment has links with hedonistic present and positive past. To sum up, the time orientations has a significant role in the formation of attachment types to the place of residence, and understanding and analysis help optimize relations between young people and environment. This positive link has benefits for both — for people and for environment.
